If you install Ubuntu 18.04 LTS on Vmware and couldn’t get the network interface to work – here is the reason: Ubuntu 18.x replace ifupdown with netplan and its config comes in a *.yaml file.
Here are the steps to get guest Ubuntu 18.x LTS network on VMware host:
1. On VMWare host, edit your Linux guest: Settings > Network Adapter > Bridge (or NAT if you want to reuse host IP).
2. To check what configuration being applied for netplan:
$ ls /etc/netplan/ 50-cloud-init.yaml
3. Edit the file to have the configuration: in this case, it’s /etc/netplan/50-cloud-init.yaml
network: Version: 2 Renderer: networkd ethernets: ens33: dhcp4: yes/no
4. Apply the new config:
sudo netplan apply
5. Verify that network is up
